The Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program at Novum Academy serves children ages 5 to 6 and provides a bridge between the Montessori Primary classroom and a more structured elementary environment.
Guided by Montessori principles, the TK program nurtures independence, curiosity, and a love of learning while gradually introducing more complex academic and social routines.
Children are encouraged to explore, make choices, and engage deeply with purposeful materials across practical life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural studies. Guides observe and support each child individually, helping them develop confidence, problem-solving skills, and social-emotional awareness.
The TK classroom is carefully organized to provide a Montessori-inspired, yet developmentally supportive environment for children preparing for early elementary programs. Child-sized furniture, low shelves, and intentionally chosen materials are within easy reach to promote independence and self-directed learning.
Children are encouraged to move freely, select their work, and follow their interests, while engaging in activities that develop concentration, coordination, and collaboration. Areas for practical life, sensorial work, early math, language, science, and cultural exploration are balanced with spaces for quiet reflection and group projects. Guides work to align the curriculum with both Montessori methods and Texas state standards, ensuring children are fully prepared academically while maintaining the freedom, choice, and hands-on learning central to Montessori education. The environment nurtures curiosity, responsibility, and confidence, helping children transition smoothly to the next stage of learning.
As children progress through TK, guides focus on preparing them for Novum Academy’s Pre-K program or other early elementary classrooms by supporting greater independence, self-regulation, and academic readiness. Children continue to practice self-care, environmental care, and social interactions, while developing literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills.
Group activities, collaborative projects, and guided lessons help children strengthen cooperation, leadership, and confidence. Even for students continuing within Novum Academy, the goal is to ensure they feel prepared, capable, and excited for the next stage of their learning journey, whether they continue with us here at Novum Academy or transition to another school.
