NOW ENROLLING FOR 2026/2027 ACADEMIC YEAR
1. What does “Novum” mean?
“Novum” is Latin for “new” or “fresh beginning.” It reflects our mission to provide a modern, innovative approach to Montessori education, where each child is given the tools, guidance, and environment to grow, explore, and thrive.
2. Why was Novum created?
Novum Academy was founded by Alexa Ybarra and Ashley Reed, who recognized a growing need for high-quality, intentional, and value-centered Montessori education in Amarillo, TX. Their vision was to create a school that nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—while staying true to Montessori principles and preparing children for a confident, successful future.
3. What is Novum Academy’s mission and vision?
Novum’s mission is to nurture confident, lifelong learners through high-quality Montessori education that encourages exploration, independence, and responsibility to others. Our vision is to cultivate a learning community of deep thinkers and positive contributors to society.
4. What values guide Novum Academy?
We are guided by values rooted in ethical leadership, educational excellence, honesty, transparency, and accountability. Our goal is to honor each child’s individuality while preparing them to thrive in a changing world.
5. Are you affiliated with a church or religious organization?
No, we are a private, non-religious school. Our curriculum is not affiliated with any religious organization, and we welcome families of all backgrounds and beliefs.
6. What ages do you serve?
At this time we provide care and education for children ages 6 weeks through 3rd Grade, supporting each stage of early development.
7. What programs do you offer at Novum?
You can view our full list of programs and details on our website here: Novum Academy Programs.
8. What does “Montessori” mean?
Montessori is a child-centered approach that encourages independence, hands-on learning, and respect for each child’s natural development. Children learn at their own pace using specially designed materials in a carefully prepared environment.
9. What does “Modern Montessori” mean?
“Modern Montessori” encompasses the idea that we follow the traditional Montessori philosophy—child-centered, hands-on learning, and fostering independence—while also preparing students for the modern world. We incorporate technology and digital literacy in meaningful, age-appropriate ways alongside traditional Montessori materials.
10. Do you follow a set curriculum?
Yes, our curriculum is rooted in authentic Montessori philosophy, emphasizing hands-on learning, independence, critical thinking, and respect for each child’s natural development. Lessons include practical life, sensorial exploration, language, mathematics, science, geography, history, art, and cultural studies, with instruction individualized based on each child’s readiness and interests.
In addition to Montessori principles, we intentionally integrate the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to ensure children develop the academic foundation and skills needed for future success while preserving the integrity of the Montessori approach.
Our curriculum is thoughtfully developed by Alexa Ybarra and Ashley Reed, who design the instruction with a mastery-based approach while intentionally integrating social-emotional learning throughout every aspect of the educational experience. This ensures students not only achieve strong academic outcomes but also build confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence, and positive relationships.
To further support authentic Montessori implementation, our director, Ashley Reed, is completing Montessori certification for ages 3–6, providing ongoing leadership, guidance, and support to ensure our program remains aligned with Montessori best practices.
11. Are your teachers trained in Montessori?
Yes, our teachers are Montessori-certified or in the process completing a Montessori diplomas/certification for the program they work in. All staff are trained in Montessori principles and early childhood education, allowing them to thoughtfully guide and support each child’s development.
12. How do you support social and emotional development?
Social and emotional growth is a priority. Our co-director, Alexa Ybarra, is a licensed clinical therapist, bringing professional expertise to guide strategies that foster empathy, resilience, and healthy relationships. Activities in Emotional Regulation help children develop self-awareness, communication skills, and emotional intelligence.
13. Do you offer specialized learning spaces?
Yes! In addition to Montessori classrooms, we have a dedicated Art/STEAM room for creative exploration and Emotional Regulation space, a calm, supportive space where children learn to identify, express, and manage their emotions. Our campus also holds a student library that encourages a love of reading and independent discovery, providing children with access to a wide variety of books and learning resources. Together, these thoughtfully designed spaces support the development of the whole child—academically, creatively, socially, and emotionally.
In the future we also plan to extend our campus to offer a student garden and outdoor classroom spaces.
14. What is a typical day like?
Each day includes a balance of independent work time, small group lessons, outdoor play, meals, and rest. Children also have uninterrupted work periods to explore materials, build concentration, and develop skills.
15. What happens after Lower Elementary?
Our TK/Lower Elementary program is intentionally designed to meet both Montessori and TEKS standards, preparing children for a smooth transition into traditional elementary school. As Novum grows, we will explore opportunities for Montessori Upper Elementary Programs.
16. What does your Infant Care program include?
Our Infant Care program provides a safe, nurturing environment for babies 6 weeks and older. Our teachers are well-trained in infant development and care, strictly following safe sleep standards. To ensure the highest quality care, we have the support of a former pediatric nurse who helps train our infant staff. Infants receive individualized attention, sensory exploration, and gentle routines to support healthy growth and well-being.
17. What are your class sizes and teacher-to-student ratios?
We maintain intentionally low ratios in all classrooms. Smaller class sizes improve teacher satisfaction and mental well-being, foster productive classrooms, and allow children to receive more individualized attention, supporting independence, confidence, and learning.

We use positive guidance and redirection techniques that emphasize respect, communication, and problem-solving. Children are supported in developing self-regulation and social skills rather than relying on punishment.
